What is TAPA?
The Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA) was founded in 1997 as a non-profit industry association to help manufacturers, shippers, and their logistics service providers minimize losses in their supply chains caused by cargo and goods theft. Members include international companies from various sectors: technology, pharmaceutical, automotive, apparel, footwear, cosmetics, personal care, food, beverages, furniture, household appliances, and metals, as well as their logistics partners.
In the following years, the TAPA certification was introduced, an international security standard designed to protect high-value goods—known as High-Value Theft Targeted (HVTT)—and goods at risk of theft throughout the entire supply chain. Every three years, current and emerging risks impacting global supply chains are reviewed. Its value is recognized by manufacturers, shippers, logistics service providers, and insurance companies, particularly for protecting high-value goods against theft both during transportation and while stored in logistics facilities.
From a Risk Management perspective, the framework provided by TAPA helps manage known risks, minimize losses, and protect both physical and human assets, reducing the financial and reputational costs that may result from cargo theft incidents.
TAPA EMEA Security Standards operates in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa and, after 2020, achieved the highest total number of certifications in the region in the Association’s 25-year history.
What certifications are available in the EMEA region?
Companies can choose the level of certification against these supply chain security standards to meet their own security requirements and those of their customers. Certification is primarily achieved through Independent Audit Bodies (IAB), approved independent auditing organizations.
Specifically, TAPA EMEA has defined the following supply chain security standards:
FACILITY SECURITY REQUIREMENTS CERTIFICATION (FSR)
The Facility Security Requirements (FSR) standards of TAPA EMEA protect high-value goods and products at high risk of theft within logistics facilities such as distribution centers.
The FSR standard specifies the minimum acceptable security standards, risk containment methods, and the multisite certification process for companies with three or more warehouses. In this specific case, the sharing of best practices among sites and teams is encouraged in order to achieve and maintain compliance with the FSR standard for risk mitigation and loss prevention.
Choosing FSR Multisite makes it possible to reduce overall costs, as it allows multiple sites to be included within a single primary certification, while preserving the objectives and integrity of the standard.
5 reasons why you should adopt the FSR standard
The TAPA EMEA Facility Security Requirements (FSR) Certification is the essential standard designed to protect high-value goods and products at high risk of theft within logistics facilities, such as distribution centers. By defining minimum acceptable security standards and risk containment methods, FSR not only enhances operational security but also offers the opportunity—especially through the Multisite option—to optimize costs and promote the sharing of best practices across multiple warehouses. Relying on an accredited certification body such as KRIPTIA ensures that the path to compliance is rigorous and fully recognized by the industry.
But that’s not all.
Enhanced Protection of High-Value Goods The primary reason is the mitigation of theft and loss risk. FSR certification establishes minimum acceptable security standards specifically for logistics facilities (such as distribution centers). Adhering to these requirements ensures that your high-value goods and products at high risk of theft are protected according to an internationally recognized benchmark, improving inventory reliability and preserving the competitive advantages of “just-in-time” deliveries. Recognized Compliance and Industry Credibility Obtaining certification from an accredited body such as KRIPTIA demonstrates your commitment to meeting the stringent TAPA EMEA security standards. This not only enhances your image and credibility with customers and business partners (especially those handling high-risk products), but also positions you as a reliable and secure logistics operator. Cost Optimization (Multisite Option) If your company operates multiple warehouses, the FSR Multisite option allows you to reduce overall costs by including multiple facilities under a single primary certification. This approach is more cost-effective than certifying each site individually, while maintaining the integrity of the security standard. Sharing of Best Practices and Internal Skills Development The certification process—particularly under the Multisite model—actively promotes the sharing of best practices among different sites and internal teams. This supports the development of internal competencies required for risk containment, ensuring that all sites operate consistently to achieve and maintain compliance with the FSR standard. Mandatory Point of Reference The fact that only a TAPA EMEA–accredited certification body such as KRIPTIA is authorized to conduct audits in this field highlights the exclusivity and rigor of the standard. By adopting it, you rely on a stringent process that guarantees full compliance with the required criteria, providing assurance that your certification is valid and officially recognized by TAPA EMEA.TRUCKING SECURITY REQUIREMENTS CERTIFICATION (TSR)
The Trucking Security Requirements (TSR) of TAPA EMEA protect goods transported by road and establish standards to ensure the security of drivers, vehicles, and cargo by preventing criminal attacks, which account for 80% of cargo losses according to TAPA EMEA statistics.
The TSR security standard specifies the minimum acceptable security requirements, the methods for achieving them, and the processes and specifications that service providers must follow to obtain TAPA EMEA TSR certification. It is recommended by the association for the following types of transport vehicles:
- rigid-sided trucks and trailers (or fixed-side vehicles);
- rigid vans or trucks with fixed bodies (or rigid chassis);
- road transport of maritime containers;
- curtain-sided trucks and trailers.
5 reasons why you should adopt the TSR standard
Adopting and obtaining TAPA TSR certification is not merely an expense, but a strategic investment that generates numerous benefits in terms of security, operations, and competitive advantage—creating new business opportunities, safeguarding your reputation, and protecting the resilience of your supply chain.
Increased Customer Trust and Loyalty
Obtaining TSR certification demonstrates a verified, high-level commitment to cargo protection. Customers who entrust high-value shipments (HVTT) to a certified logistics operator—also known as a Logistics Service Provider (LSP)—have the assurance that their goods are handled according to the best global security protocols. This transparency and security strengthen trust, turning commercial relationships into long-term partnerships and increasing customer loyalty.
Greater Security and Operational Resilience
The TSR standard requires the implementation of rigorous systems (telematics, locking systems, secure parking) and standardized operating procedures. These measures drastically reduce the incidence of theft, robbery, and cargo tampering. Fewer disruptions caused by security incidents make the supply chain more resilient and reliable, ensuring service continuity.
Improved Workforce Protection
As also highlighted by TAPA’s Drivers’ Security Guide, cargo security is inherently linked to driver safety. TSR requirements (and supporting guides such as the LSG and TSG) mandate procedures aimed at protecting personnel from assaults and robberies. Investment in security translates into a safer working environment, improving employee well-being and reducing the legal and human risks associated with security incidents.
Strengthens Your Brand Reputation
Being a TSR-certified company places the logistics operator (LSP) among the industry’s elite, differentiating it from non-certified competitors. Certification acts as an internationally recognized mark of quality. This elevates brand perception as a premium and reliable service provider, specialized in handling sensitive cargo.
New Business Opportunities
Many manufacturers and shippers of high-value goods (as well as insurance companies) explicitly require—or strongly prefer—to work only with logistics partners that hold TAPA TSR certification. Certification opens new business opportunities, particularly in the technology, pharmaceutical, luxury fashion, and other sectors where the potential impact of theft is extremely high.
